Improving outcomes for stroke patients
Stroke is the fifth-leading cause of death in the United States, and a leading cause of long-term disability. Quick action can dramatically improve outcomes for stroke patients.
While many strokes can be treated with medication, an especially dangerous type of stroke caused by a large blood clot requires quick access to an advanced interventional procedure to prevent disability or even death. The procedure -- known as mechanical thrombectomy – gives these patients the best chance of achieving a successful outcome.
Lancaster General Hospital is the first and only hospital in Lancaster County to offer mechanical thrombectomy, which involves physically removing large clots from the brain. Since late 2018, when LGH committed to making this life-saving treatment available, our stroke care team has treated over 1,600 stroke patients, including more than 75 patients who would have previously needed to be transported out of the county for care.
Delivering advanced treatment options close to home is part of LG Health’s long-standing commitment to caring for our community. Our team of neurovascular experts also treats traumatic injuries to the head and neck, as well as other brain and spinal abnormalities. These advanced treatments benefit our community with life-changing results.
