Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute recognized for helping patients reduce financial distress
The Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute (ABBCI) was recognized with the Innovator Award from the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC) in October. Now in its fifth year, the Innovator Award recognizes forward-thinking organizations that present case studies of their experience running a new program, implementing a new technology or fostering innovations that aim to change the way oncology care is delivered.
ABBCI was recognized for the implementation of Cancer Patient Assistance program. Working with the local community, ABBCI created the program for patients experiencing financial distress. Oncology supportive services providers and members of the Lancaster General Health Foundation developed comprehensive funding guidelines and tools, including a financial tracking spreadsheet and process map.
“The philosophy at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute is to take care of the whole person, not just addressing their clinical problems or issues,” said Patti Inama Roda, Oncology Clinical Support Manager, in a video submitted to the ACCC. “It’s really looking at them as a person, (as well as) their family or significant others and taking care of them also.”
